Hurricane Relief Work
by Lutheran Homes of Michigan in Biloxi, MS

December 2005: Lutheran Homes of Michigan received a call from the director of an assisted living care facility for seniors (Seashore Retirement Community, a program of Mississippi Methodist Senior Services, Inc.) in Biloxi. He shared that his 48-room care facility has completed the necessary steps so that the men and women, who had been evacuated because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, can return to their homes. The building has been repaired. Individuals are asking to return. But his call was to say that he doesn't have enough staff in place to enable residents to come home.

Lutheran Homes of Michigan has responded by having four teams of 6-8 employees volunteer to travel to Biloxi so that the residents of this facility can return to their home. For eight weeks, LHM staff will help hurricane victims "come home". "Our entire organization felt a desire to help this sister member," states David M. Gehm, President and CEO of LHM. "We quickly focused on the logistics of sending teams of 6-8 persons for two-week stints to Biloxi as long as there was a need."

Lutheran Homes of Michigan and Seashore Retirement Community are both members of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). As members, they are "mission-driven, not-for-profit organizations dedicated to providing the services people need. The first team found they wear several "hats" throughout the work day from preparing meals to simple maintenance as well as assisting with social activities. In just a few days they came to know and grow attached to the residents. Between the Southern hospitality and warm reception, the team members felt very much appreciated.

Mike Mahan, Administrator"This has been a truly wonderful experience for us - being able to open our Assisted Living Facility," states Mike Mahan, Executive Director of Seashore Retirement Community. He continues by adding, "The positive attitudes of the LHM team are incredible and hopefully will have a lasting effect on the lives of the people that they have touched during the past weeks. Thanks to you [Lutheran Homes of Michigan] for sending the teams to us."

Picture of Seashore Retirement Community Welcome to LHM Staff

Being able to respond to the need of helping seniors in need, especially those affected by the hurricanes, is awesome.

Our response has thrilled the men and women who reside at Seashore Retirement Community, it has inspired their limited staff, and has been inspiring to our “Michigan volunteers” (as they call themselves).

From December 29, 2005 through February 22, 2006, Lutheran Homes of Michigan staff will be leaving their own home and families so that they can continue to make a difference in the lives of these frail elders who just want to be home.

What an awesome gift they are sharing! I am proud that Lutheran Homes of Michigan can help in this very real and very needed way.

Please care about the issues and services that impact individuals, especially seniors in need. I’m sure that your heart has been touched by the extent of destruction and displacement caused by the hurricanes. Your care + compassion can also intersect with this ministry opportunity to help seniors, hurricane victims, and an agency similar to ours that is making a difference in the lives of others.
