National Grandparents Day is September 10, 2006

Lutheran Homes of Michigan offers these great ideas to help families celebrate "National Grandparents Day" the first Sunday after Labor Day. Proclaimed by Congress in 1978 as a day set aside to honor those in the "autumn years" of life, "National Grandparents Day" originally began as a way to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes and as a way to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.

Fun ideas to help celebrate the special day:

  • Visit your grandparents

  • Send your grandparents an Email card or message

  • Make and give a "World's Greatest Grandma/Grandpa" certificate

  • Color a picture to share with your grandparents

  • Bake cookies with your grandparents

  • Have photos taken of you with your grandparents

  • Learn about your family history - a great way to spend time with your grandparents
