MAHSA REGION I
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2000
EDWARD G. KURTZ
LUTHERAN HOME, MONROE
At the 32nd Annual Recognition Luncheon of the Michigan Association
of Homes and Services for the Aging May 1, 2000, Edward Kurtz
received the Volunteer of the year award for Region I. An except from
the luncheon follows:
Description of Volunteer Activity: Edward Kurtz was an
administrator at the Lutheran Home-Monroe for 18 1/2 years, retiring
on March 31, 1990. For the past 10 years, Edward Kurtz has
volunteered at the Lutheran Home-Monroe as a driver for doctor
appointments and shopping trips. He also supports his wife Phyllis in
her numerous volunteer jobs at the Home.
Edward had a way of being firm and courteous in any crisis, and his
demeanor was a sincere interest in people. People always came first
with him. "You realize that so many people have had more of a
difficult time than you've ever had. To see how some of them face the
problems they have, you understand that they're a bunch of wonderful people."
Making a Difference: Since retirement, Edward has served on
the Monroe Community Health Services Board of Directors and currently
serves as secretary/treasurer. He also serves on the Monroe Ventures
Board of Directors, which oversees the hospital's Macomb Pharmacy.
That Special Touch: Edward says his job as administrator was
instructional and inspirational. "The whole thing taught me self
awareness and humility." Together with his wife Phyllis, their
continued involvement is greatly appreciated by the residents at
Lutheran Homes.
The Selection Committee was impressed with Edward's lifelong
commitment to the Lutheran Home-Monroe, both as a professional and
now, as a volunteer. It was obvious to the committee that the key to
Ed's success was his love for people and respect for their many and
varied gifts.
